Chapter Eight

Surveillance

It was still warm at night, and we drove to Perry’s Pizza with the top down. I wore my mother’s favorite golf visor to keep my hair from blowing and played loud music on the radio. For the first time in two weeks, I felt that my dad was focused on me. It felt good. We ordered a large “Super Supreme” and a pitcher of Coke to sit there and pig out while we talked about a lot of things. I tried to understand what my dad was saying about a new relationship. I know he’s lonesome, but I also know he’s vulnerable right now and maybe not thinking clearly. I know my role is to protect him from himself.

I worked a few questions about Karen into the conversation, and he didn’t seem suspicious about that. Now I know where she lives, where her “Manufacturer’s Representative” office is, and that she was thirty-nine years old. Two years younger than my dad, the same age my mother was when she died.

After our meal, we drove down along the shore to watch the sunset, and I hadn’t seen my dad look so happy in a long time. I wonder if I’m doing the right thing by investigating Karen. Part of me doesn’t want to find out anything that would hurt him, but a more significant part of me feels there is something funny about this relationship. Besides, I’m sure he’d be happier with Beth.

When we got home, I went upstairs with Mr. Whiskers to research further into the new data I had just collected. I Googled her address and entered that into my Case 002 file. Then I went to Google Earth and zoomed down on her home like a hawk. It wasn’t much of a house, probably two bedrooms and one bath. Not what I expected from someone who dressed as fancy as she did and drove a Cadillac. There was a single garage separate from the house, and maybe the car was in there because it wasn’t showing in the driveway. A split cedar fence enclosed the backyard, but there was no dog or any kid toys. There was a similar house to the right and left of hers, and when I went to street view and panned in both directions, it looked like a development of copycat homes. The community name was Hemlock Hills. I know where that is, and I can ride there on my bike. I don’t understand why it’s called ‘Hills,’ there aren’t any.

When I Googled her “business” address, I got really suspicious. There was nothing there. It was in a bad part of the city and appeared to be only a vacant lot. There was probably a building there at one time, but now only an old foundation. I went to the street view and panned around and shivered. It was scary.

I entered that information into the file, then sat there staring at the screen. My head was rapidly filling with all kinds of possibilities.
